From St Francis of Assisi to today the church has spoken about social justice regarding mankind only. It was Pope Francis, a few years ago, who came out with the only encyclical that treats with justice that is due to the environment and the earth’s ecosystems. I am suggesting that we are all waking up too late maybe - even the church itself.

Indigenous people proud of their heritage have respect and hold the earth and its creatures in reverence. Western technological societies have cut themselves from the earth and live in artificial environment. The observation is becoming more obvious that our economies depend on the earth resources and if we send the earth bankrupt, our economies will go bankrupt too. It’s no longer tenable “that there is more from where that came from”. The earth resources need to be managed and the “throw away society” isn’t sustainable any more. Malta is a microcosm of what the earth will become like under unsustainable pressures.

Sorry not to be part of the zoom. The time difference is a little prohibitive for me in Australia. And sad to hear that Joyce has passed.

This is a very practical topic, because it’s really down to earth. The problem isn’t the wealth but it’s the way we use it. For too long the church rejected anything to do with the material world - when we fail to recognise that “God so loved the world” to become one of us. The “one of us” means everything involved in what it means to be human. It’s has been a paradox to reject the world/earth when the Creator accepts it worts and all. The world has to be built up and humanity evolved. We have the great responsibility to participate in its development not reject it - in the wrong perception of ensuring our ticket to heaven!

Regarding what Connie was observing. Since Constantine sponsored Catholicism the church became too political and misinterpred the core of the Gospel. We are slowly returning back to the Gospel.

I like to congratulate Karm for his conversion. It marks the time of our conversion by listening to the message delivered in the right sense.

Since God is “Community of persons” God celebrates with our us as ‘community’. God’s action lifts us to the level of God’s love by example.

God seems to forgive without the need of intermediaries too. The father went himself to meet the son - he didn’t send anyone on his behalf.

A point that struck me during the interpretation of the prodigal son’s predicament , in ending up herding pigs in a foreign land. So he in fact lost his status not only a a Jew,, but also as a worthy human being. In his predicament this son reversed to the unclean status of an animal he ended up herding - he basically descended to being no better than a pig., himself. Naturally, Grace kicks in at this point and a human being is innately conscious that, even though we can trace our evolutionary ancestry to the animals, our destiny is to evolve higher in spirit and not returning to a state that is unworthy of our authentic humanity. This is the tension that sin brings upon us: that consciously, we intuitively, feel which direction we ought to be heading. - our sense of right and wrong calls us away from being just thoughtless animals.

Excellent explanation about the meaning of the unconditional love of the Father towards us sinners.

It’s interesting that such a classic parable attributed to Jesus, only shows up in St Luke’s gospel. And strangely enough, Luke himself isn’t an apostle - one of the chosen twelve - and he was most likely a Gentile too. Naturally he was close to some who knew Jesus personally - St. Peter and st Paul. And he may have known Mary - Jesus mother - on account of the infancy narrative that only appears in such great detail only in his gospel too. So it makes one wonder how St Luke came across such a deep insightful story about our Heavenly Father’s love for his children. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall, during a possible conversation he may have had with Mary, because she would have had an extraordinary insight about her Son’s relationship with his Father - at a level that no one else would have had. It’s fascinating for me that someone two thousand years ago, during the Apostolic Age, became aware of such deep mystery about God’s love, and wrote it down for posterity in such an ingenious parable, like that of the Prodigal son.

I believe that the very disturbing human condition of the present will pass. Who has brought us here will lead us out into where we ought to be as a humanity, and more. The evil forces of power and greed will yield to God’s great Love and Mercy. There is no other way because we do not ordain the universe.

When you have a deep scholarly look at the Old and the New testaments one begins to wonder how much of it is actually true, or actually historical, and what of it is legend and myth. Yet the whole edifice of Holy Scripture stands or falls on whether the death and resurrection are historically authentic or not. The Cross and the resurrection of Jesus marks the authenticity of these events in the History of our salvation as much as the red cross on a geographical map marks the actual location of a place that can be verified. In 1 Corinthians 15:19 St. Paul states it clearly: “if we have only hoped in Christ in this life, we are of all men most pitiable”.And who would put their life on the line for just a legend or a an inaccurate account of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The cruxifixction account has to be the most historical of all accounts of scripture. Certainly for me is the cross that brings it all real and alive.

In my 77 years of my life, it has only been that in my last five years, that I began to see the Good News the way you are explains it now. The younger people that are coming up now are blessed to be fed by these new perceptions. Thank you Karm for your teachings on behalf the new generations.

For centuries we couldn’t distinguish between religiosity and spirituality - we used the terms interchangeably. It’s now becoming more obvious that Spirituality is inherent to every human being - even to those who have no beliefs. For me, that has been a major perception, because it altered my view how to look at all people - who my neighbours are. My neighbours are not simply the people who may share my belief, or those who I feel a sympathy for, but the members of all humanity, that share my inherent spirituality in my human nature. It has become apparent that religions have a major weakness; they create division and exclusiveness in the way that transmit their traditions. Religion is the kindergarten towards Spirituality. If religion manages to build me up towards my Spirituality it would have redeemed me. If on the other hand religion becomes an end in itself, it would have misses the point completely.

Karm. Today you spoke out with utter conviction. There were times when you hesitated a bit, but I think that you feel that your audience has matured. Like St. Paul when he stated that his congregation has grown out of being fed milk, and it was time to start feeding them meat. Good on you. If our teachers in the past fed us a lot of misconceptions about God and ourselves, its encouraging to see teachers like you changing their perception and state it with courage. If we trusted our teachers in the past that passed us so much superstition and mis reading of Scripture, how grateful and more accepting we are when they encourage us with the truth? God bless you. God wants to share God’s vision with us, but we are often too immature to grasp it. This isn’t impossible, many have achieved this - and notoriously stick out from the rest, because their insight and vision become extraordinary. The Bible exemplified the human condition in the story of the Fall. If Eve got her way to control her own destiny, instead of accepting the destiny God has prepared for her, we would have ended up not with religion but with Magic. The irony is that in most of human history mankind have acted and taken over, as if Eve had her way. The more immature we are, the more we keep sparing with God to take over control.

This explains the mercy and greatness of a living God

Definition of “human” being? There is a way of being authentically a human being - as much as there are many ways of being inauthentically a “human being”. That’s how God as Creator continues to shape us in our becoming - becoming human in God’s image. We are a work in progress. This should give us great hope. Unfortunately as Fr Karm suggested at the beginning of today’s session, we get unstuck by the words that roll around in our heads, causes us to misinterpret reality. Thank you for today’s inspirational program. And as always the followers, and those who ask a lot of questions are women at a ratio of about 1:10 in their favour. God bless them.

One of the problems we have inherited is that we keep referring to God’s creation in the past tense. Fr Karm’s frequent phrase is “Alla Halaq”. As if after the seventh day God rested and finished the job. I think that from this premise we have come to many wrong conclusions about God, and even our selves. When the Old Testament refers to God as the potter, and when St. Paul refers to us as God’s work of art, we get the impression that creation isn’t rested at all, but active and ongoing. The Creation that was initiated, is evolving in a continuous and present sense in space and time, and it’s wrong if we regard it as completed - and that there isn’t any hope for any of us becoming better than who we are, and how we feel about ourselves. For the ancient people, the universe was regarded as static, and up to almost the present many religious bodies still regard it that way. From Scripture reading, especially the New Testament, arise the sense of “becoming human but not yet”. There is also the sense of the expectation of the end times, when things have reached their fulfilment, which reinforces the idea that Creation isn’t static but dynamic - not only as far as our creation but also the evolution of everything else in the universe. In all this movement the “Holy Spirit is renewing the face of the earth” .Psalm 104. This renewing is all an indication that God is still actively creating everything. There isn’t any past tense as far as Creation. Regards.

Many of our wrong preconceptions about God find their origin in times when our religious education/upbringing was too pragmatic, and based predominantly, not on love but on legalism - on retribution, and not on blessing. Instead of looking at God who St. John called Love, and that we were created in God’s image, we turned God into our image on our own faulty terms. Many would say that in those days our ecclesiastical authorities erred on the side of Caution, but I suspect that that isn’t the full story. There is too much calibration to our way of thinking that we need undergo. Especially in Malta, old fashioned religious sensibilities die hard. This type of seminar learning begins to reverse the trend and hopefully broadens the mind.
